If you have a wound that has not shown significant improvement in four weeks, or that isn’t completely healed in eight weeks, is known as a chronic wound and should be seen by a wound care clinic. Chronic wounds can become infected, which could lead to more serious consequences, such as hospitalization or amputation.
Yes, no doctor referral is necessary to make an appointment with R3. However, if you have an HMO, you will need the approval of your PCP for insurance purposes.
Treatments performed at R3 are covered by most health insurers. We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare. An R3 clinic coordinator can help guide you through requirements, as your insurance provider may require prior authorization for some treatments. They utilize advanced wound care treatments that standard doctors aren’t trained or qualified to perform. Placing your care in the hands of a wound care specialist maximizes your chances of long-term healing because you can benefit from specialized treatments and procedures. They also treat all patients holistically, always intending to improve one’s quality of life to ensure the best healing possible.
R3 Wound Care and Hyperbarics prides itself on providing more individualized, one-on-one care with wound care specialists. The higher level of attention you get from a private practice vs. a hospital-owned facility often leads to more optimal and efficient individual outcomes.
On your first visit, please arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment, preferably with your initial paperwork completed. You may download this paperwork to fill out here.
Also, please bring the following:
• Form of Identification. Driver’s License if preferred.
• Your Insurance Card.
We will scan a copy for future reference and return this to you.
Your initial appointment will be in-depth and detailed, so plan on being with us for about two hours.
One of our wound care specialists will assess your condition and evaluate your medical history. We may take blood for testing. You’ll receive our recommendations for your treatment plan at that time.
A good rule of thumb is to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and provides easy access to the area of the body that’s giving you problems. We want you to be comfortable while you are evaluated and treated.
You will have an appointment with one of our wound care providers, who will evaluate you and your condition and ultimately see you during each visit thereafter. If hyperbarics is a part of our treatment plan, you will also work with our HBOT technician.
This ultimately depends on your condition and what you and the wound care specialist determine is your best course of treatment for helping you heal. Your provider will fully discuss all your treatment options and recommendation before proceeding with your individual course of treatment.
Of course. Your course of treatment will be determined with input from you, your wound care specialist, and your physician. When needed, we will provide your doctor with progress reports and updates, and we’ll consult with her/him whenever necessary.
After your first appointment, subsequent appointments will usually last around 30 minutes.
If you are receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), sessions average 1 ½ to 2 hours in duration. This includes the time needed to bring the oxygen pressure up at the beginning and reduce it at the end of the session.
This depends on your condition and the severity of your wound. Sometimes one or two visits may be enough, while other conditions may require multiple treatments. For hyperbarics, on average, patients will have an average of 20 treatments. We will remain fully transparent during the evaluation and treatment process regarding what you may expect with your situation. And, where appropriate, we will fully consult with and provide updates to your physician.
Wound care should not generally hurt, and we closely monitor all treatments to ensure your experience is effective yet comfortable. HBOT is painless, although some people feel pressure in their ears similar to what’s experienced during the descent of an airplane. We can show you techniques to lessen the pressure in your ears.
Our state-of-the-art chambers are made of clear acrylic to give you a full view of your surroundings. You’ll have plenty of room to recline comfortably and relax. You will not feel isolated — you’ll be able to see, hear and communicate with your HBOT technician at all times. They will work with you to ensure that you are comfortable before moving forward. During the treatment, you can sleep, listen to music, watch a movie or just relax. If you feel you may experience anxiety, our medical director or your primary care physician may prescribe medication to calm you during the procedure.
Your wound care provider and doctor (if referred) will keep you informed of your progress. When you are healed sufficiently, you will be discharged.
Generally, additional treatments are not necessary. If your problem returns, simply give us a call and we’ll consider the best option for moving forward. This may include additional visits with your wound specialist or hyperbaric technician.
