Transcutaneous oximetry (TCOM) is a noninvasive test that measures how much oxygen is reaching the skin via blood circulation. It helps wound care specialists detect/evaluate poor blood flow in the underlying tissues. This knowledge is invaluable in planning successful therapies for healing wounds.
The test takes about 45 minutes and is painless. After the test area is cleaned with alcohol, a gel is applied. The gel conducts electrical impulses from adhesive sensors on the skin, which sense how much oxygen is reaching the skin in the test area and how well the capillaries beneath the skin are functioning.
The TCOM readings are an effective predictor of a patient’s ability to heal and also help establish selection criteria for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
TCOM may be used in evaluating these conditions:
- Arterial and venous insufficiency ulcers
- Crush injuries
- Delayed radiation injury
- Diabetic complications
- Sudden sensorineural hearing loss
- Necrotizing infection
- Pressure ulcers
- Surgical wounds, grafts, flaps
- Wound dehiscence
