VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY ULCERS
Difficult-to-heal skin ulcers can be caused by faulty valves in veins that increase the pressure in the veins. The pooling of blood and high venous pressure causes a breakdown of the venous wall and leakage. The resulting inflammatory response leads to the eventual degradation of surrounding tissue and skin.
ARTERIAL INSUFFICIENCY ULCERS
Arterial insufficiency compromises circulation in the extremities and the capillary bed. Ulcers occur when injury or pressure in the area of poor circulation causes tissue and skin to break down. Before treatment of the ulcer begins we must determine that the patient does not have DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and has adequate blood flow to heal.
